with Rachel Bennett in Isla Bastimentos, Panama
6 nights in Isla Bastimentos, Panama
Mon Jun 08 - Sun Jun 14, 2020
Looking to get away from the daily grind? Prepare to disconnect from monotony and reconnect with the universe on this island paradise.
We will explore traditional Kuna medicine. Kuna are a self-governing Native tribe on the Caribbean coast of Panama. Though many of the Kuna have been influenced by Western life in Panama City, the medicine women continue to use their knowledge of plants in the region to heal the local people. These women carry with them generations of knowledge about the properties of hundreds of native plants. They go by the name "Nele" and treat patients for a variety of problems, from bouts of the flu to more serious illnesses such as cancer and AIDS. Since the Kuna Yala Islands have little vegetation and no natural fresh water supplies, the women rely on the rivers and rainforests of the mainland, but they take only what they need.
You will be hosted at Selina Red Frog which is a 10-minute boat ride from Bocas Town on the beautiful Isla Bastimentos. Get the best of both worlds surrounded by rainforest, mangroves and white sand beaches.
Want a little social energy? Head to colorful Caribbean Bocas del Toro, famous for its Afro-Caribbeans vibes, blend of cultures, and blue-green water. Dreamy, surreal and seductive, stepping into this island destination is like stepping into another world. Its crystal-clear water that will draw you in, and the captivating energy that will make you want stay.
